比亚迪电动车E6吸引美国市场目光

If you have a hankering for an electric car but you don’t have the cash for a Tesla, your choices are few. Unless you want something hand-built, you’ll need to wait for a Chevy Volt or Nissan Leaf. Now your options appear to be expanding with the addition of a new player from China, BYD. Unfortunately, it still involves waiting. This company, like Nissan and Chevrolet, expects to start delivering its E6 all-electric model in the U.S. in 2010. BYD has attracted no less than investor Warren Buffet, who has purchased a stake in the company. The Leaf and E6 both differ from the Volt in that they do not carry a gas-powered engine but rather depend entirely on batteries. Nissan says the Leaf can go 100 miles on a charge. BYD is planning on offering a range of battery and motor combinations that can be optimized for either distance or performance. A maximum distance of 249 miles is possible, and various motor options offer from 101 to 269 hp. I can hear it now, “But officer, this is an electric car. I can’t possibly have been going that fast.”

The interesting question will be to see how many of the three actually manage to pull it off and get some cars in consumers’ hands during 2010. For the moment, my money is on Nissan to be first. GM probably has something to prove now that it is post bankruptcy, but I doubt they’ll be able to make it happen. BYD is certainly the dark horse of the trio. Delivering the E6 in 2010 is earlier than had been planned, so that may strain their capabilities. Buffet is probably pushing the schedule, but there’s quite a distance involved.
